/// Accomplishments

■ A new I-65 bridge over the Ohio River, centerpiece of the $1.3 billion Downtown Crossing portion of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project, will open to traffic in January 2016 — three months ahead of schedule.

■ With project partner Indiana, Kentucky hired a toll system contractor for the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project.

■ KYTC partnered with Waze, the social media transportation pioneer, to expand and improve real-time traffic information for the motoring public.

■ KYTC helped secure funding for “ZeroBus,” a fleet of zero-emission, battery electric public transit buses for Transit Authority of River City, in Louisville.

■ The Kentucky General Assembly was persuaded to pass legislation preventing a sudden and potentially crippling drop in the state excise tax on motor fuels, thus stabilizing the state Road Fund.

/// New Initiatives

■ The cabinet’s Office of Highway Safety, in partnership with several local law enforcement agencies, has launched a campaign for heightened enforcement of the Kentucky law banning texting while driving. A portion of federal highway safety funding supports two-person patrol teams — one officer to drive, a second officer to spot offenders.

■ Project Managers’ Boot Camp — a holistic approach to project management, giving managers authority, confidence and knowledge with which to develop all aspects of a project.

■ Crash reduction effort through use of enhanced, oversize highway signage on roadway segments with high crash histories.

/// Looking Ahead

■ Completion of the widening of I-65 will create a six-lane corridor from the Ohio River to the Tennessee border for one of the nation’s premier commercial routes.

■ KYTC is on track to complete an I-69 corridor in western Kentucky, mostly by upgrading three state parkways, including reconstructing nine interchanges to interstate standards.

■ A new, four-lane bridge to carry U.S. 68/KY 80 across Kentucky Lake will be open to traffic by year’s end in tourism-rich Jackson Purchase region.
